She devolops her narrative along the lines of the emerging surveillance culture in the families and the public of the 18th century, labeling masturbation as an heinous sin, even though before that noone really bothered…

Biondi relates our digital age to a seemingly long gone age of repression, pointing out that there are plenty of signs in today’s culture that repression is on the verge of taking over again.

Video (in German): SpiegelMining – Reverse Engineering von Spiegel-Online. Wer denkt, Vorratsdatenspeicherungen und „Big Data“ sind harmlos, der kriegt hier eine Demo an Spiegel-Online.

Über 100K Artikel, in über 700K Versionen, hat David Kriesel in den vergangenen beiden Jahren bei SPIEGEL Online eingesammelt. Hier präsentiert er die Schlüsse, die sich daraus ziehen lassen – u.a. für die Vorratsdatenspeicherung, für die Arbeit von Online-Medien, Tendenzen im Umgang mit den Usern.

  1. Welche Ressorts bestimmen die Themen?
  2. Welche Textlängen kommen aus welchen Ressorts?
  3. Wer arbeitet mit wem zusammen?
  4. Wann werden die Texte online gestellt?
  5. Wie sieht die Keyword-Landschaft aus?
  6. Wie verhält sich die Redaktion bei den Kommentarfunktionen? Wann ist die freigeschaltet, wann nicht?

Video (in German): Build your own NSA – How private companies leak your personal data into the public domain, and how you can buy it.

Svea Eckert und Andreas Dewes stellen vor, wie sie an den angeblich anonymisierten Datensatz von ca. 3 Millionen Browserverläufen gekommen sind – über den der NDR im November berichtet hatte.

Mit den auf einem grauen Markt erworbenen Daten können Eckert/Dewes belegen, wie unaufwendig es ist, einen solchen Datensatz zu deanonymisieren. Selbst die Herausnahme von nutzerspezifischen deep-links verhindert es nicht, in einer Matrix aus 9M domains und 1M Individuen eindeutige Nutzerprofile bzw. Zuordnungen herzustellen. Durch den Abgleich mit öffentlich verfügbaren Daten über eine Twitter-API, Likes bei der IMDB, oder Google-Maps-Geodaten reichen die besuchte Domain und der Zeitstempel aus, Individuen und ihre persönlichen Aktivitäten 100%-ig zu identifizieren.

Speaker KaLeiMai (slides here) argues that humans have shaped geological formations for thousands of years, have extincted many big mammals on every piece of earth they ever set their feet on, and have – more recently – polluted the air, distributed nuclear waste and its immissions, advanced climate change a.s.o.

Stratigrapical research has shown that ever since the last ice age human impact has changed the world in a sense that it seems to be reasonable to change the name of the epoch from Holocene to Anthropocene. KaLeiMai presents diffent proposals from inside the stratigraphical research community about this interdisiciplinary approach to scale time periods, to agree about names and the voting that has already happened inside the community.

Video: The Clash of Digitalizations – The Devolution of Arab Men from Humans to Digital Fodder

Saud al-Zaid presents his interesting PhD-thesis, he is himself very doubtful about: Is it bigotry vs. racism or is both that thrives programs to use prejudice and political nihilism.

Starting with Francis Fukuyama (The End of History) und Samuel Huntington (The Clash of Civilizations) al-Zaid dives deeply into the imagery of first person shooter games, from Castle Wolfenstein to Call of Duty. Diving into it, for a long time the gold old’n’ugly german nazi fitted best as an impersonation of the evil, in the end being it Hitler himself the player has to fight.

These days arab males are made (constructed) to impersonate the evil, having Mr. al-Zaid admitting that he feels threatened through this image change in the last decades. His talk brings in an important dicussion about culturally as well as technologically driven images of evil and good, latter being in most commercial games (of course) mainly white man.

Karsten Nohl explains why noone should post its boarding pass on Instagram. A passenger gets access to an airline’s website usually using its last name and its six-digit booking code. Having these information, the account is compromised, because everyone owning this information can eventually have access to the passenger’s account.
